$18 minimum wage in California? What to know about next year's ballot measure

SAN DIEGO (KSWB) – Californians will be able to vote on a new measure in 2024 that would raise the state’s minimum wage to $18, as inflation and cost of living increases have exacerbated the effects of income inequality in the state. An initiative, called the Living Wage Act of 2022, has been qualified by the secretary of state for next year’s ballot. Should it pass, the measure would extend the phased increases implemented in 2017, bringing the second highest-in-the-nation statewide minimum wage up to $18 over the next few years.The last bump under the phased increases to minimum wage was in 2022, with inflation becoming the driver of baseline raises this year. Video: mandatory evacuations still in place after Pajaro River levee breaks

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) -- The Pajaro Levee near Santa Cruz breached around midnight Saturday after the most recent atmospheric river began dumping rain in the area, according to the County of Monterey. Gov. Newsom works with federal government after fall of Silicon Valley Bank A mandatory evacuation has been in place for the community of Pajaro since the levee breached. When the breach happened, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency and the California Department of Water Resources were both at the site working on flood prevention at the levee. The levee is upstream from the small community of Pajaro, and an evacuation order was issued that impacted more than 8,000 residents. Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North Monterey County Fire, and CAL FIRE all participated in door-to-door evacuation efforts starting as early as Friday. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Monday it test-fired two cruise missiles from a submarine off its east coast, the latest in the country’s series of weapons tests.The test on Sunday came a day before the U.S. and South Korean militaries begin large-scale joint military drills that North Korea views as a rehearsal for invasion.The official Korean Central News Agency said Monday that the missile launches were meant to confirm the reliability of the weapons system and gauge underwater-to-surface offensive operations of the country’s submarine units. Kansas coach Bill Self out of hospital after heart procedure

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self was discharged from a Kansas City-area hospital Sunday, where he had been recovering after a procedure to treat blocked arteries in his heart, and the Hall of Famer plans to rejoin the No. 3 Jayhawks as they begin defense of their NCAA championship this week.Self went to the emergency room Wednesday night, shortly after watching his team in a final shootaround ahead of the Big 12 Tournament, and was complaining of chest tightness and concerns with his balance.Dr. Mark Wiley, the chief of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Kansas Health System, said Self underwent a standard heart catheterization and had two stents placed to help treat the blocked arteries.“Coach Self responded well to the procedure and is expected to make a full recovery,” Wiley said.The Jayhawks were coached in the Big 12 Tournament by Norm Roberts, who also served as acting coach earlier in the season, while Self was serving a school-imposed four-game suspensi...

(WHDH — A nasty nor’easter expected to bring up to 18 inches of heavy, wet snow to communities at higher elevations in Massachusetts is taking aim at New England.After a pleasant day Sunday, the next storm system moves into the region on Monday. By the end of the day Tuesday, much of New England will be under a fresh coat of plowable snow.The storm is projected to bring 1 to 3 inches to communities along the coast; 3-6 inches to the I-495 corridor and parts of Western Mass; 6 inches to a foot for the Worcester hills and higher elevations in Western Massachusetts; and a jackpot of 12 to 18 inches for some towns in northern central Worcester county and the Berkshires.We’re also tracking the potential for damaging winds and minor coastal flooding as the storm moves through.
