Lana Payne’s year of action: Unifor’s president on workers’ window of opportunity TORONTO — One year to the day of her election as national president of Unifor, Lana Payne had strong words for leaders at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. As the union kicked off bargaining with the trio of major automakers known as the Detroit Three, Payne made it clear that workers’ expectations have climbed alongside the cost of living. “This is the moment we are in,” she told reporters and union members, just hours after shaking hands with representatives from each automaker to signal the start of negotiations.“And no one — no one — should underestimate it.”The last few years have led to this critical moment. After the COVID-19 pandemic, breakneck inflation, rising corporate profits and a staggering succession of interest rate hikes, Unifor, like other unions, is under intense pressure to deliver more for workers: more pay, more benefits, more stability.“When you’re the biggest private-sector union in the country, there are big expectations for what you’re a...

One-third of Americans are tattooed, study finds (WGN) – Look at the person to your left. Look at the person to your right. Odds are, one of you has at least one tattoo.A new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center appears to suggest that sporting a tattoo has become broadly accepted among Americans in recent decades. What's more, Pew's study indicates a trend which seems to span fairly evenly across a variety of demographics. What’s the difference between a hurricane and a tropical storm? The survey, which polled nearly 8,500 people, found that 32% of adults say they have at least one tattoo — and the majority of those adults actually had more than one.As for who is most likely to have a tattoo, the survey broke down results by: gender; race and ethnicity; age; education; income; religion; and sexual orientation. Those demographics were further broken down by the likelihood of having only a single tattoo versus multiple tattoos.Though the combined percentages show a decent amount of variance, the likelihood of having a sing...

Do fruit flies serve a purpose? (WHTM) – We have all dealt with them. You will be sitting down and watching TV and something tiny whizzes past you. You go to the kitchen to see if the insect came from there, and you find that a few fruit flies have decided to call your bowl of fruit their new home. For many, fruit flies are some of the most annoying creatures on this planet (along with mosquitoes). So, do they serve a purpose? Why do these tiny little bugs exist? According to Terro, the primary thing fruit flies love is just that: fruit. Terro says the bugs are attracted to fruits as well as vegetables. They can also breed on drains, garbage disposals, trash containers, empty drink containers, and even soapy water buckets. The main thing fruit flies need to survive is a moist film of organic material to breed and thrive. But, Gardener's Supply says that these little bugs can actually be considered beneficial, but only in some cases. The gardening site says that the decaying matter they eat can turn into a source of...

Real World Economics: Why China matters, and doesn’t matter Edward LottermanSometimes a sardonic quip for one era preserves wisdom for a later one.During World War II, Bill Mauldin, a young soldier and editorial cartoonist, created and published popular cartoons about the war’s realities featuring GI characters Wille and Joe. In an early 1945 panel, one of Mauldin’s two scruffy soldiers reads newspaper reports of popular uprisings in Germany. The other sardonically advises him, “Sure … . Get down so they don’t hit ya wit’ a wild shot.”That pretty much sums up what the rest of the world can do today about economic tumult in China. There are few, if any, actions that any other country can take to influence events there.Yes, it is entirely possible, since China’s economy is the second largest in the world, that its problems may affect people and businesses in other countries, including the U.S. But all we can do is “get down.” In other words, just react. And to be sure, the problems regarding China’s economy are numerous.Consid...
