RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil coach Fernando Diniz brought 17-year-old striker Endrick to the senior national team for the first time Monday for two big clashes of World Cup qualifying in November: Colombia away and Argentina at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.Endrick will join Real Madrid next year and has been key for Palmeiras to challenge for this year’s Brazilian championship title. Casemiro and Neymar, two frequent starters of the team, were left out due to injury.Brazil will face Colombia in Barranquilla on Nov. 16 and host the World Cup champion five days later. Lionel Messi’s Argentina leads South American qualifying with 12 points in four matches. Brazil is third with seven points and failed to win both rounds of the round-robin competition in October; a home 1-1 draw with Venezuela and a 2-0 loss at Uruguay put more pressure on Diniz, who will remain on the job until June next year in the hopes Carlo Ancelotti will take over.Six teams from South America ...7 bystanders wounded in shooting at Texas college homecoming party, authorities say

HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — Authorities outside of Houston were searching Monday for those responsible for a shooting at a large college homecoming party that left seven people wounded. Gunfire broke out around 10 p.m. Sunday at a Prairie View A&M University homecoming party near the school’s campus, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of downtown Houston, according to the Waller County Sheriff’s Office.Detectives arrived at the “trail ride pasture party” and found two men, two women and a male minor had been shot, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. They all suffered gunshot wounds “to their lower extremities” that appeared not to be life threatening, according to the statement. The sheriff’s office said more than 1,000 people attended the party and that police were called after an argument escalated into gunfire. Investigators are unclear on how many people opened fire but said each of those injured was a bystander.A promotor, who authorities did...Dolphins’ trend of struggling against the NFL’s better teams was on display again

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have faced three teams this season that currently have winning records. They’re 0-3 in those games.Against everyone else, they’re 6-0.The trend couldn’t be clearer and it was on display again Sunday in Frankfurt, Germany, where the Dolphins got behind 21-0 against Kansas City and wound up losing 21-14 to the defending Super Bowl champions. They looked good in the second half but once again not good enough.“All we can continue to do is work and not lose sight of where we want to go as a team,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “We’ve got to continue to stick together and not deviate from that, regardless of what everyone outside is saying, and we’ve just got to put our head down and keep going.”Miami has lost games to Philadelphia (8-1), Kansas City (7-2) and Buffalo (5-4). Those three games are the only ones this season in which the Dolphins haven’t held a lead; they trailed the Bills by 28, the Chiefs by 21 and the Eagles ...Why are buildings lit green in Denver this week?

Polish President Andrzej Duda remained loyal to the nationalist Law and Justice Party (PiS) and on Monday evening nominated outgoing Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to try to form a new government.“I decided to continue the good parliamentary tradition according to which it is the winning grouping that first gets the chance to form a government,” Duda said in a national address. There isn’t much chance of that succeeding.Although PiS is the largest party following the October 15 election, taking 194 seats in the 460-member lower house of parliament, after eight turbulent years in power it has no realistic chances of wooing enough MPs to its side to cobble together a majority.Duda ignored an appeal by three opposition parties which together control 248 parliamentary seats, despite their declaration that they will form a government with Donald Tusk, who served as prime minister from 2007 to 2014, as the new leader. The president said that after meeting with party le...Anne Frank kindergarten in Germany discusses changing name, sparking uproar

A German kindergarten’s longstanding discussion around changing its name from “Anne Frank” to “World Explorer” was criticized by Jewish community members and local politicians in recent days amid the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war. The discussion has been ongoing “long before the current discussions and events,” the press release from Tangerhütte, where the kindergarten is based, clarified on Monday. “The discussion arose at the beginning of 2023 to make this fundamental change in concept visible to the outside world by giving the institution a different name in order to visibly mark this fundamental new beginning,” the release said. The months-long discussions suddenly sparked a storm over the weekend as Germany grapples with both a resurgence of antisemitism and issues of anti-Muslim sentiment as the fallout of the war between Israel and Hamas plays out across Europe. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Monday that “what we have seen today in Gaza is no longer proportional,” slamming Israel’s recent strikes on refugee camps.Since Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel — which killed 1,400 people — the country has launched ongoing retaliatory strikes in the densely populated Gaza Strip, killing more than 10,000 Palestinians including thousands of children, according to Hamas-controlled health authorities. While De Croo said he has condemned Hamas’ attack and supported Israel’s right to defend itself, recent retaliatory attacks have been excessive.“Bombing an entire refugee camp with the intention of taking out one terrorist, I don’t think you can say that is proportional,” De Croo said on Monday. “It is a bridge too far. And also unbridled violence in the West Bank, you have to be careful.”Israeli airstrikes hit two refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday. A 22-year-old woman charged for the stabbing death of a victim on Boston Common over the summer was ordered to be held without bail. The court decision came Monday, days after Weymouth resident Alyssa Partsch, 22, was arrested over the weekend.Authorities said Partsch was taken into custody on Saturday morning for her alleged role in the death of 21-year-old Jazreanna Sheppard of South Boston. Her arrest came months after police originally found Sheppard suffering from multiple stab wounds the night of July 20 outside of Park Street station on the Boston Common.According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, surveillance video of the incident showed Partsch approach Sheppard while holding a knife and then stab her numerous times in the head and neck.“Assistant District Attorney Kaitlin Tolbert said the two women had never met but that Partsch had sent Sheppard numerous antagonistic social media messages,” the DA’s office stated in a news release.“It...Mystery of African elephants dropping dead unraveled by scientists

(CNN) — The cause of mysterious mass deaths of African elephants has finally been unraveled — and scientists who authored a new report say that the outbreaks could be more likely to occur amid conditions created by the ongoing climate crisis.Thirty-five African elephants in northwestern Zimbabwe dropped dead under baffling circumstances between late August and November 2020. Eleven of the massive herd animals died within a 24-hour period.“They died over a very narrow window. That’s one of the most enigmatic parts of the whole puzzle. That many animals dying quite close together but not right next to each other over such a narrow space of time. It’s really to my mind, rather unique, certainly in this part of the world,” said Dr. Chris Foggin, a veterinarian at Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe, who is a coauthor of the study on the cause of the deaths.Earlier that same year, about 350 elephants in neighboring northern Botswana also had died suddenly over t...Medicare expands the roster of available mental health professionals

Judith Graham | (TNS) KFF Health NewsLynn Cooper was going through an awful time. After losing her job in 2019, she became deeply depressed. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and her anxiety went through the roof. Then her cherished therapist — a marriage and family counselor — told Cooper she couldn’t see her once Cooper turned 65 and joined Medicare.“I was stunned,” said Cooper, who lives in Pittsburgh and depends on counseling to maintain her psychological balance. “I’ve always had the best health insurance a person could have. Then I turned 65 and went on Medicare, and suddenly I had trouble getting mental health services.”The issue: For decades, Medicare has covered only services provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and psychiatric nurses. But with rising demand and many people willing to pay privately for care, 45% of psychiatrists and 54% of psychologists don’t participate in the program. Citing low payments and bureaucratic hassles, more ...Latest news
