JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eight people died on Missouri roads over the long Fourth of July weekend, and four people drowned on the state's waterways, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Wednesday.The patrol said 56-year-old James Roy of Kansas City, Missouri, drowned in Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday. Hamsa Mohamed, 41, of St. Louis, drowned Saturday after jumping from a cliff into the Big River in Jefferson County. SLMPD investigating several overnight shootings Two others drowned on Tuesday. A 6-year-old boy died at Lake of the Ozarks. His name was not released. In western Missouri, 22-year-old Carlos Antonio of St. Joseph drowned while swimming at Smithville Lake.Three of the five traffic deaths happened Saturday, while the other five were on Tuesday. The Riverside County Fire Department is responding to a multi-acre brush fire near Temecula Wednesday afternoon.The Sandia Fire, as it's been named, broke out in the late morning near the 48100 block of Sandia Creek Drive, the RCFD said on Twitter. As of about 12:10 p.m., the fire had reached 5 to 10 acres in size and was consuming "light flashy fuels at a moderate rate of spread," fire officials said. Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of an elderly woman in a Torrance home earlier this week, police said Wednesday.Torrance police officers responded to a home in the 24200 block of Walnut Street around 6:30 p.m. Monday for a suspicious death.The woman was found dead in the home and detectives later determined she was the victim of a homicide, police said without elaborating.After an investigation, one person was arrested on suspicion of murder, and a second was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact. Police have not identified the suspects and only described them as being adults. Amaya Hernandez in Critical Condition after Fatal Accident on Dover AvenueKINGS COUNTY, CA (July 5, 2023) – Saturday night, a motorcycle collision claimed the life of Brandon Moreno and left Amaya Hernandez injured.The incident happened on May 27th, officers responded to the area of Highway 43 and Dover Avenue, just north of Hanford, involving a motorcycle-vehicle crash.According to reports, Moreno and Hernandez were traveling south on a motorcycle southbound on Highway 43.
