Thousands rally in Pakistan against Israel’s bombing in Gaza, chanting anti-American slogans ISLAMABAD (AP) — Thousands of supporters of Pakistan’s main politico-religious party rallied in the capital, Islamabad, Sunday against Israel’s bombing of Palestinians in Gaza, chanting anti-American slogans and accusing the U.S. of “backing the aggressor.”The extreme right party, Jamaat-e-Islami, had announced a march from Islamabad’s famous Abpara intersection to the US embassy in the high-security diplomatic enclave. However, stern action by the authorities the previous night forced the religious party to modify its program and hold the rally in a major street well away from the protected area. Police pulled down the party’s encampments on Saturday night, detaining the local leadership and dozens of supporters. Because of the plan announced by Jammat-e-Islami and the risk of violence, the US embassy issued an advisory for American citizens living in Islamabad and the surrounding area to “limit unnecessary travel on Sunday.” It advised U.S. citizens to avoi...

CRTC urged to mandate better supports for Deaf Canadians during phone service outages When a major telecommunications outage left more than 12 million users without wireless service in July 2022, the disruption was far more dire for the many Canadians dependent on accessibility apps. That day, Rogers Communications Inc. customers spent hours unable to use their mobile devices for calling, texting or browsing the web unless they were able to find a Wi-Fi connection. But for those like Kimberly Wood, who is Deaf, it meant any form of communication was practically impossible. That included finding out about the outage at all.As Canada’s telecommunications regulator seeks to improve transparency and reporting requirements surrounding major network outages, members of the Deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind community are urging the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to take their needs into account so that situation doesn’t repeat.“There are certain services that if disrupted would affect everyone — both hearing and Deaf. Residents of Maine gather to pray and reflect, days after a mass shooting left 18 people dead LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Church bells rang Sunday as Maine residents gathered at somber and sometimes joyful services to pray and support one another following a traumatic week in which a fellow Mainer gunned down 18 people in the worst mass killing in state history. The Rev. Daniel Greenleaf began services at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston with a moment of silence. Then, he told the congregation that it was good to be able to finally pray together after days of lockdown imposed while police searched for the 40-year-old gunman Robert Card. The body of Card was found Friday in a trailer at a recycling center in Lisbon Falls. Card died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but it was unclear when, authorities said. Card is suspected of also injuring 13 people during the shooting rampage on Wednesday night in Lewiston. If you have a question you’d like an expert to answer, send it to [email protected] many hours does the average American spend on devices each year? – Maxwell P., age 10Think about your favorite devices – your smartphone, laptop, tablet, computer or console – the things you use to play cool games, watch hilarious videos and connect and chat with friends. Many young people spend a lot of free time looking at them. Turns out that teens spend an average of 8½ hours on screens per day, and tweens – that’s ages 8 to 12 – are not far behind, at 5½ hours daily.Keep in mind those numbers are for only social media, gaming and texting. Real World Economics: Bonds are in the news. But what exactly is going on?

Real World Economics: Bonds are in the news. But what exactly is going on? Edward LottermanBonds are in the news — and their fluctuations in yields and price are influencing stocks and the overall economy. But even those who understand what’s going on may have a hard time explaining how this affects the “real world” that you and I live in.“Bond Market Volatile;” “Bonds React to GDP Numbers;” “Yields and Prices Fluctuate In Bond Markets,” are all recent headlines. But what does it all mean?Unfortunately, this can be a bit confusing even for well-educated financially literate members of the general public. What exactly is the “price” of a bond and how could it fluctuate? What is the “yield?” Is that different from a bond’s interest rate? What exactly is a “bond” itself? And how is a corporate bond issued by, say, Boeing, different from a share of stock in Boeing? How is a bond different from a CD? What is a “bond fund?” And what in the heck is a U.S. Treasury “bill” or “note” as opposed to a “bond”?It’s time for a primer.A bo...
