Opinion: Don’t give developers and builders a free pass on shoddy work

Opinion: Don’t give developers and builders a free pass on shoddy work As the unlucky buyer of a poorly built condo, the recent Denver Post editorial advocating for proposals that would weaken the rights for homeowners is infuriating. Buyers should expect developers to build their new home right – and if it’s not, be able to hold developers legally accountable to fix it.I’m a living example of someone who is largely priced out of the housing market. Purchasing my condo in an affordable housing development in Five Points was a dream come true. Not only could I afford to buy my place, but the central location also meant I had access to light rail.Colorado’s predictable late summer rains revealed our builder didn’t grade the structural decking properly and used subpar materials. As water streamed into our front doors and ran down our indoor walls in sheets, the damage was clear. We repeatedly tried to get our developer and builder to repair the damage, but they dragged their feet and offered only pathetic “caulk and walk” efforts that didn’t begin to fix t...

Opinion: Why a direct flight to Africa from Denver would be “two-way transformational”

Opinion: Why a direct flight to Africa from Denver would be “two-way transformational” A direct flight between America’s mile-high city and Africa’s mile-and-a-half-high city seemed like a good idea when former Mayor Michael Hancock and Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington told me about it, but it never came to fruition. A few weeks ago, I saw for myself the strategic importance of connecting Denver to Addis Ababa and with it, the entire continent of Africa.Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is the hub of Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa. Its planes fly to 62 cities in 38 African countries. Currently, there are no direct flightsbetween Denver and Addis or any African city. Denver International Airport is our nation’s midcontinent hub for international flights so that needs to change.A direct connection to Ethiopia is valuable in other ways. When the Atlanta Airport, the busiest in the world, added a direct flight to Addis Ababa earlier this year, the city’s mayor heralded the business opportunities that would benefit both communities. Solid play by minor league call-ups keeping Avs steady amid long-term absences of Samuel Girard, Artturi Lehkonen For the Avalanche to get to where it wants to go, its call-ups need to keep delivering. After depth was an issue for the Avs last year, especially down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs, this year’s team is getting consistent play from its fringe players promoted from the minor league Colorado Eagles.Case in point: Forward Ben Meyers got called up from the AHL on Monday, then promptly went out and scored that night in the Avs’ 6-5 comeback win over Calgary at Ball Arena.“I thought (Meyers) was rock-solid defensively, and then he also chipped in a big goal,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “It’s as good of an outcome for calling up a player as you can imagine.”Two long-term absences by defenseman Samuel Girard (NHL/NHLPA players assistance program) and winger Artturi Lehkonen (neck injury) created a need for the Avs to lean on the Eagles for NHL-ready players. In addition to Meyers, other fringe players who have made an ...

Coloradans have a mile-high debt problem. Here’s why.

Coloradans have a mile-high debt problem. Here’s why. Colorado has one of the most physically fit populations of any state in the U.S., but the same can’t be said regarding fiscal fitness.Colorado households are weighed down with the heaviest debt burdens of any state, even when looking at more expensive places to live like California and Hawaii, according to a study from Forbes Advisor.Nowhere do consumers carry a higher share of debt relative to their incomes than in Colorado, which could prove problematic if years of heavy borrowing across every sector of the economy triggers the next big downturn as Fed watcher Jim Grant is predicting. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Household Debt and Credit Report measures mortgages, car loans, student loans, credit cards and other personal debts. It is essentially an exercise in stepping on the debt scale.Forbes Advisor, a personal finance website, took the debt totals for each state for 2023 and divided those by population estimates from last year to come up with a per capita househ...
