PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Harrison is officially a major leaguer.Well, not officially. Not until he is added to the roster Tuesday, when he will make his debut against the Phillies. But standing at his locker here, in front of his gray No. 45 jersey, the newly minted 22-year-old sure looked the part as the Giants’ top pitching prospect in a decade addressed his highly anticipated promotion.Your reaction to the news?“I couldn’t happier to be here. Ready to help these guys out with whatever they need.”How do you think you’ll handle the notorious Philly fans?“People tell me it’s the same game everywhere you go. So just keep that in mind, go out there and trust my stuff and do the best I can to help the boys win.”What helped you start finding the strike zone more consistently?“I think it was just kind of a mental thing with me, just slowing the game down.”These were big-league answers — cliches — from Harrison, who has long shown poise beyond his...House’s Freedom Caucus unveils demands to support spending bill and avoid shutdown

By KEVIN FREKINGWASHINGTON — House conservatives in a group known as the Freedom Caucus have unveiled a list of demands that they want included in a stopgap spending measure to keep the federal government running after the end of September. It’s a smorgasbord of non-starters for the Democratic-controlled Senate and the White House, signaling the challenges House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will face next month to get a bill passed in the House without alienating a sizeable share of his conference.Historically, members of the Freedom Caucus rarely support short-term spending bills to keep the government open, but with Republicans holding just a five-seat majority in the House, they have significant leverage over the agenda. Still, McCarthy will likely need votes from Democrats to pass a short-term funding measure than can also get through the Senate and be signed into law.Among the demands from the House Freedom Caucus:— Spending levels below the top-line numbers that McCarthy had agreed t...Is Steph Curry the best point guard ever? He says yes.

The debate over who’s the greatest point guard in NBA history will continue to rage on, but a focal point of the conversation weighed in this week.Stephen Curry is regularly pitted against Magic Johnson in the GOAT of point guards discussion, but the Warriors star voted for himself when asked point-blank by Gilbert Arenas on a recent episode of the “Gil’s Arena” podcast whether he thought he was the best point guard ever.Curry paused for a brief second before turning to Arenas and responding, “Yes.”As Arenas shook his head and silence filled the room, Curry slightly hedged his answer, adding, “I would have to — yes. It’s me and Magic.”Arenas agreed and suggested Curry’s immense influence on the game as a reason the four-time champion might have an edge over Johnson.“We can look at stats and try to judge,” he said. “I wasn’t around with Magic… I know there’s not a lot of 6-9 point gu...Javon Hargrave looks dominant in first game with 49ers, will look better next to Nick Bosa

SANTA CLARA – Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave sure enjoyed his debut in a 49ers uniform at Levi’s Stadium, albeit for a preseason affair.“Still, I felt the energy as soon as I went out there. It was a great feeling,” said Hargrave, the 49ers’ prized acquisition in free agency after he defected from the Philadelphia Eagles.Hargrave and the 49ers’ defensive line await an even greater feeling: Nick Bosa joining them and ending his training camp holdout. It’s believed Bosa’s agent and the 49ers’ brass are in the throes of contract talks, with the outcome still expected to yield the NFL’s largest-ever contract for a non-quarterback. If skipping training camp was Bosa’s preference, this is the final week of such practice. Friday’s game against the Chargers and Bosa’s brother, Nick, is the last before the 49ers essentially switch into regular-season mode. With under three weeks until the Sept. 10 opener in Pittsburgh, defensive coordinator Stev...Alameda County Sheriff's Office seeks help looking for missing woman

The dual crises were kicked into motion when former Prime Minister Imran Khan was removed from power last year and deepened with his recent imprisonment on corruption charges.Last week, the Pakistani authorities moved to charge Khan under Pakistan’s Official Secrets Act for his alleged mishandling of a classified diplomatic cable, known internally as a cipher. The March 7, 2022, cable had been at the center of a controversy in Pakistan, with Khan and his supporters claiming for a year and a half that it showed U.S. pressure to remove the prime minister.
