During Colorado tarantula migration, females see males as a tasty snack

DENVER (KDVR) — Every fall, male tarantulas will travel up to 20 miles across southeast Colorado to find a mate. While thousands participate in the "mate-gration," around one-third of them won't survive the mating season, and it's partly because females eat them. FOX31 spoke with Sara Stevens, the director of animal collections at the Butterfly Pavilion, who explained that the life span of female tarantulas is much longer than males -- regardless of if they eat the males or not. Thousands of tarantulas migrating across Colorado roads Male tarantulas' life span revolves around their mating period. When male tarantulas become sexually mature, they use courtship behaviors to tap on a female's burrow, almost like knocking on her door. If she's interested, she'll tap back. If she doesn't think he's a viable option, she may try and make him a snack, said Stevens. "So, it's a little bit of a perilous situation if you're the male. LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Public schools on Maui started the process of reopening and a major access road reopened in signs of recovery a week after wildfires demolished a historic town and killed over 100 people, even as officials raised concerns Wednesday that the very young and old were among the dead on Hawaii’s second-largest island. At least three schools untouched by flames in Lahaina, where entire neighborhoods were reduced to ash, were still being assessed after sustaining wind damage, said Hawaii Department of Education superintendent Keith Hayashi. The campuses will open when they’re deemed safe.“There’s still a lot of work to do, but overall the campuses and classrooms are in good condition structurally, which is encouraging,” Hayashi said in a video update. “We know the recovery effort is still in the early stages, and we continue to grieve the many lives lost.”Elsewhere on Maui, crews cleaned up ash and debris at schools, and tested air and water quality. A man has been convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Patricia Moreno in Malden in 1991, officials announced. After a six-day trial, Rodney Daniels was convicted of Moreno’s murder, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Malden Police Chief Glenn Cronin said.“When a family loses a loved one in a homicide, even the passage of time never fully heals that wound. That is especially true when they do not have answers about what happened and no one has been held accountable,” Ryan said in a statement. “Those who knew and loved Tricia have been waiting over three decades for answers. When I created our Cold Case Unit, it was my hope that we would be able to get to these resolutions.” In addition to conducting new interviews, investigators also learned that an alibi witness, who protected Daniels in 1991, later admitted to friends and family that Daniels had killed Tricia and concealed the weapon in an armchair...Special prosecutor appointed in Kendra Lara car crash case as councilor pursues dismissal

A special prosecutor has been named to oversee Kendra Lara’s car crash case just as the city councilor moved to toss the charges claiming she was not served a citation at the scene.Worcester Assistant District Attorney Joel Luna was tapped by the Suffolk District Attorney’s office as the prosecutor in the case because the wife of William King, an opponent of Lara’s in the upcoming municipal elections, works in the city DA’s office, a spokesman told the Herald.“We just felt that because there was a connection between one of her opponents and our office, we just thought it would be advisable to have a special prosecutor appointed,” Suffolk DA spokesman James Borghesani said.Borghesani said the Suffolk DA’s office uses special prosecutors “quite a bit” whenever there is a conflict like an employee having a relationship with someone who is connected to a case.“So nothing unusual for a special prosecutor,” he said.A spokesman for the Worcester DA’s office declined to co...Patriots-Packers joint practices Day 1: Ezekiel Elliott debuts, offense hobbled by 13 sacks in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Bill O’Brien’s offense was finally in full, glorious view Wednesday morning under a baby blue Wisconsin sky.Motions, fakes and Mac Jones at the controls, whipping darts that punctured holes in Green Bay’s soft zone coverage. Temperatures climbed into the mid-80s, as the Patriots went head-to-head with the Packers over their first of two joint practices. Jones sizzled. He started 8-of-12 in team periods, calm and confident with a full complement of weapons and quarterback tools. He changed tempo, plays and targets. Then, the machine slowed down. Pieces fell off.Penalties, sacks and a second near interception sent the offense in reverse. Jones’ 2-minute drill ended with Bill Belichick reaming him out for a situational error. After two-plus hours, the Patriots had probbaly practiced the Packers to a draw on both sides of the ball, but the shaky foundation of O’Brien’s offense — its line — had reinforced major concer...Quincy man accused of ‘nightmarish’ attack held without bail

Amos Sykes, 35, of Quincy, was ordered held without bail following a dangerousness hearing at Boston Municipal Court Wednesday.“This brutal, random attack is exactly the type of incident for which it’s in the best public interest to move forward with a dangerousness hearing,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said following the hearing.Sykes was arraigned Monday and charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, indecent assault and battery, assault to rape, strangulation, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.Police responded to the area of West Canton Street and Appleton Street at around 9:40 p.m. Saturday after several witnesses in the area heard a woman screaming and saw a suspect punching her in the head as he sat on her, according to a BPD statement. When police arrived, some of those witnesses were purportedly fighting with Sykes in the woman’s defense, but Sykes fled before police caught up to him.
