By PAUL NEWBERRY (AP Sports Writer)ATLANTA (AP) — Jim Poole, who spent parts of three seasons pitching for the Giants during his 11-year career and gave up the deciding homer to Atlanta’s David Justice in the 1995 World Series with Cleveland, died of complications from ALS. He was 57.Georgia Tech, his alma mater, announced that Poole died Friday in the Atlanta area surrounded by family. He was diagnosed two years ago with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative condition also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.Poole made it to the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1990 and played predominantly with the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland and the Giants. The left-handed reliever also had stints with the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and Montreal Expos before his retirement after the 2000 season.Poole made 431 appearances over his career, all of them out of the bullpen. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Jim Poole has died, the team announced on social media Saturday afternoon. He was 57 years old. Warriors to hold practice at Chase Center open to the public Poole, who played college baseball at Georgia Tech, spent three seasons in San Francisco from 1996 to 1998, including the 1997 campaign in which the Giants won the NL West. The reliever pitched a total of 105.1 innings as a Giant, according to Baseball-Reference. The Giants did not disclose the circumstances of Poole's passing. Poole played 11 MLB seasons, including stints with the Dodgers, Phillies and Rangers. A Lorton, Virginia, man was arrested in Florida on Friday night after stabbing his mother and fleeing the area by vehicle, according to police.Fairfax County police said 27-year-old Jorge Andres Esquivel Rivera was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol on the same day he stabbed his mother. Police allege that Esquivel Rivera stabbed her several times in the upper body in a Lorton apartment.Officers responded just before 1 p.m. Friday to an apartment in the 9200 block of Cardinal Forest Lane, where they found the woman suffering from stab wounds. She was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries where she currently remains, police said.It was determined that Esquivel Rivera fled the area in a vehicle.
