Bruins blow late two-goal lead, suffer first loss of season in overtime The Bruins may have won ugly a few times this season, but they suffered their first loss of the season in spectacular fashion. On the verge of setting franchise mark for the best start ever in their 100-year history, the B’s gagged up a two-goal lead with less than two minutes left in regulation and then Mason McTavish scored at 2:08 of overtime to lift the Anaheim Ducks to an improbable 4-3 victory on Thursday at the Garden. The kicker was that the B’s played some of their best hockey of the season in the second and third periods. But when it was winning time, the B’s found a way to lose, failing time after time to clear the puck in empty net situations.“It was a lack of poise with the puck. We had opportunities, I thought,” said coach Jim Montgomery, whose team fell to 6-0-1. “I thought the game was over twice with the empty net. Guys were whiffing on pucks, guys trying to go for empty nets instead of using the walls on an indirect to clear and ge...

US fighter jets strike Iran-linked sites in Syria in retaliation for attacks on US troops WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. fighter jets launched airstrikes early Friday on two locations in eastern Syria linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Pentagon said, in retaliation for a slew of drone and missile attacks against U.S. bases and personnel in the region that began early last week. The U.S. strikes reflect the Biden administration's determination to maintain a delicate balance. The U.S. wants to hit Iranian-backed groups suspected of targeting the U.S. as strongly as possible to deter future aggression, possibly fueled by Israel's war against Hamas, while also working to avoid inflaming the region and provoking a wider conflict.According to a senior U.S. military official, the precision strikes were carried out near Boukamal by two F-16 fighter jets, and they struck weapons and ammunition storage areas that were connected to the IRGC. The official said there had been Iranian-aligned militia and IRGC personnel on the base and no civilians, but the U.S. does not have any ...

Badgers humble Gophers men’s hockey team in new coach Mike Hastings’ return to his home state When he was introduced as Wisconsin’s new head coach last spring, Minnesota native Mike Hastings talked about his long friendship with Gophers coach Bob Motzko. Hastings was gently reminded that in his new job, he would need to beat Motzko’s team from time to time. The new Badgers boss checked that off his list right away, as Wisconsin rallied from an early deficit for a 5-2 win at top-ranked Minnesota on Thursday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.Mathieu De St. Phalle and Cruz Lucius each scored a pair for Wisconsin (6-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 Big Ten), which has won three in a row. The Badgers got 22 saves from goalie Kyle McClellan for their first win in Minneapolis since February 2021.The Gophers (3-2-0, 0-1-0) got an early goal from captain Jaxon Nelson and the first career goal from sophomore forward Charlie Strobel, but lost their second consecutive game. Minnesota goalie Justen Close had 29 saves in the loss.Minnesota grabbed the lead just 15 seconds into the game when Nelson ti...

Dean Phillips will run against Biden Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., a moderate who has for months publicly argued that President Joe Biden should not run for reelection, announced his candidacy for president Thursday, setting up an underdog challenge for the Democratic nomination. In an interview with CBS News, Phillips — who plans to officially launch his campaign Friday in New Hampshire — argued that finding an alternative to Biden was essential because of polling showing the president at risk of losing to former President Donald Trump.“I will not sit still and not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we’re going to be facing an emergency next November,” he said.Late Thursday evening, he posted his campaign announcement on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, saying, “It’s time to put our country back together again.”Phillips, a third-term congressman who represents a district that includes suburban Minneapolis, enters the race with long-shot odds. The Democratic establishment and major donor...

No spin from Wild after ugly loss in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA — The Wild dressing room was a no-spin zone on Thursday night. After absorbing a 6-2 loss to the Flyers at Wells Fargo Arena, players didn’t mince their words about the direction their season is in danger of heading.“Obviously, it’s still early,” veteran Pat Maroon said, “but we’ve got to nip it in the butt now because we can’t let this keep trending the wrong way.”In another of a series of slow starts, the Wild fell behind 3-0 in the second period before briefly coming to life, but a key turnover opened the floodgates for a three-goal Philadelphia third.Flyers wing Bobby Brink, a rookie who played high school hockey at Minnetonka, scored his first two NHL goals and goaltender Carter Hart stopped 26 shots and the Wild head into the second of back to backs Friday in Washington having lost three of their past four games (1-2-1).Dakota Mermis and Marcus Foligno scored 85 seconds apart in the first five minutes of the third period to make it 3-2, but with the Wi...
