Greece wants the EU to stop migrant boats before they even get to Europe. In an interview with POLITICO, newly appointed Greek Migration Minister Dimitris Kairidis called on the EU to resume an operation that aims to halt migrants before leaving Libya, a common departure point for asylum seekers coming to Europe. The appeal comes as the Greek government fights off allegations of negligence after a shipwreck killed hundreds of migrants heading for Europe from Libya. Survivors have claimed the Greek coast guard’s attempt to tow the vessel caused it to capsize, and various media accounts have shown the boat was stalled for hours before the coast guard intervened. “These tragedies will continue to happen unless we stop departures from Libya and other places on ships that are unseaworthy,” Kairidis said. “There will, unfortunately, be cases where it will simply be impossible to always save human life.”One solution to avoid other tragedies, Kairidis argued, is for the EU to resume “Op...Police investigating crash involving fire truck in Stoughton that sent 2 to hospital

Published Mon, 16 Dec 2024 13:42:23 GMT
Yet another slow-moving system is in the forecast, looking to produce widespread showers and storms on Sunday. A flood watch is in effect for most of the area, with 2-4″ more rain expected for locations already saturated from rainfall this week. Early Sunday morning, heavy showers and storms will start firing in eastern New York and head into New England. By noontime they will start to move over the Boston Area, with some downpours capable of 2″ per hour rainfall rates.Showers and storms then head south and east of Boston for the evening, piling up another 2″+ for the South Shore, Cape, and islands. The risk of flash flooding is high, given how saturated the ground is. Locations north and west of Boston are at highest risk, but even locations outside the flood watch could see flooding. In addition to the flood risk, thunderstorms may have enough energy to cause some isolated wind damage. This does include a slight risk for a spin-up tornado or two, but and tornado ...Uncharacteristic James Paxton performance headlines stunning Red Sox loss

On Saturday, Boston’s ‘Little Engine That Possibly Could’ came to a screeching halt. After cruising to victory with a barrage of home runs in Friday night’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox found themselves on the receiving end of a similar offensive onslaught; a series of questionable defensive decisions and miscues coupled with an uncharacteristic collapse by James Paxton culminated in a 10-4 loss to the 43-48 NL Central team.Highlights were few and far between. Justin Turner extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a pair of doubles, a run, and RBI, and Triston Casas homered for the second time in the series; at 112.1 mph and 425 feet, the rookie’s 11th home run of the year was the farthest and hardest-hit ball of the game.By game’s end, the Cubs had tallied 12 hits and four walks and held the Red Sox to six and three. They were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Masataka Yoshida celebrate...Alleged fraudster Monica Cannon-Grant found to have violated conditions of her release

Boston activist Monica Cannon-Grant, who along with her late husband was indicted last year on 18-fraud related counts related to their charity Violence in Boston, was found to have violated her release conditions by receiving her father’s financial benefits.“Because the defendant is a serial fraudster, because the defendant’s prior history as a family fiduciary is marked with red flags, and because the defendant has a history of deceiving financial monitors, the government opposes the defendant’s request,” federal prosecutors wrote in a Feb. 7 motion opposing her request to amend her release conditions to handle her father’s set finances.Cannon-Grant’s request was filed in federal court in Boston in February, but it along with two response motions from prosecutors were unsealed Friday. At a hearing held then, Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein found that “there was a clear violation of conditions of release” and ordered that Cannon-Grant no longer have access to her father’s Vet...Mets’ closer David Robertson’s second-half hopes: ‘Stay here and not give up a run’
Published Mon, 16 Dec 2024 13:42:23 GMT
David Robertson has one goal for the second half of the 2023 season: “Not give up a run.”The Mets have been using the right-handed reliever as a closer this season in the absence of Edwin Diaz and he’s been an integral part of the bullpen. Coming into the weekend, the 38-year-old veteran was 3-2 with a 2.06 ERA and 12 saves and a 202 ERA+. The Mets have been able to count on little this year, especially when it comes to relief pitching. The 4.15 ERA is the seventh-worst in the league, just ahead of the Yankees. The club’s decision to lean heavily on organizational talent and relievers with options has backfired. Robertson and the other high-leverage relievers like left-hander Brooks Raley and Adam Ottavino have been overused at times and gone unused at others.“By and large, some of the guys pitching late in the game have been called on a lot,” general manager Billy Eppler said Friday. “The scores of our games kind of plays into that a little ...Defending champion Christopher Bell captures pole position at NHMS
