PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Bailey Tardy picked a good time and a beautiful location to play her best golf.Tardy made eagle on the par-5 sixth hole at Pebble Beach for the second straight day as part of a torrid start to her second round Friday in the U.S. Women’s Open, and she held steady the rest of the way for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot lead among the early starters. She fit the profile of a 36-hole leader at a historic Women’s Open in which the stars have been nearly as absent as the sun behind a constant marine layer over the Monterey Peninsula.Tardy is a 26-year-old rookie on the LPGA Tour who has made only four cuts this year, her best finish a tie for 23rd in Hawaii. Her only professional victory was two years ago on the LPGA’s developmental tour. She is No. 455 in the women’s world ranking. And she was not the least bit surprised when she walked off the 18th green at 7-under 137, leading Allisen Corpuz (70) and Hyo Joo Kim (71) by two shots.“I’v...California Gov. Since being taken out of the starting rotation in mid-May Nick Pivetta has emerged as a formidable weapon out of the bullpen, and Friday he made his strongest case yet for a potential return to full-time starting duty.Pivetta threw five strong innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight, and the offense kept rolling for its sixth consecutive game with 10 or more hits en route to a decisive 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics. As has been the case in many of his recent outings, Pivetta entered the game following an opener, this time left-hander Brennan Bernardino. The Athletics followed a similar strategy on their end, using lefty Sam Long to help keep the Red Sox from loading up with lefties at the top of the lineup.Bernardino got the job done, throwing a clean first before stranding runners at the corners for a scoreless second. Long started off strong, posting a scoreless first as well, but then things came unglued in the second when Alex Verdugo, Ki...Ex-Yankee Jameson Taillon, Cubs spoil Carlos Rodón’s pinstripe debut

All eyes were on the Pinstripers’ new pitcher on Friday night, but a former Yankees starter did the team in for the second time this week. While Carlos Rodón looked fine in his long-awaited Yankees debut, Cubs starter Jameson Taillon held his previous employer to one measly hit over eight scoreless innings in a 3-0 win for Chicago. The right-handed Taillon, who pitched for the Yankees from 2021-2022 and left in free agency over the winter, entered the game with a 6.93 ERA, but he made easy work of a Bombers lineup that has often looked lost with Aaron Judge on the injured list.Taillon added two walks and four strikeouts over 102 pitches against his old team. The performance outdid Jordan’s Montgomery’s Sunday afternoon, when the ex-Yankee and current Cardinal blanked New York for 6.2 innings. As Taillon dominated in his return to the Bronx, Rodón threw 5.1 innings and 69 pitches in his first start for the Yankees.
